Thirteen columns create thirteen open spaces that physically represent the absence of those who were killed — a poignant reminder of the gap created in the lives of their families. The mausoleum is made of laterite and clay bricks that were sourced locally from the region, continuing Sankara’s commitment to using earth construction in Burkina Faso.
