The pavilion’s site lies at the transition between two terraces. It originally housed a school office, with its entrance on the lower terrace and its roof used as a terrace aligned in elevation with the upper platform. As the spatial center of the site and the only building whose primary structure was permitted to be altered, the pavilion became the first candidate for vertical extension—and indeed for an additional two levels—so that it could be seen from each of the principal buildings. This elevated open floor can function as an adjunct to the nearby activity plaza, providing space for temporary equipment storage and for people to gather and linger, while also concealing the stair that leads up to the second level.
