It needed to turn toward the best views and rise high enough to shield itself from outside sightlines. In the three or four years she lived with us, she never broke a cup, never knocked over a phone, camera, or even a mouse. She constantly adapted her fluid body to fit an everchanging setting. New bamboo tiles are costly, so we chose to reuse discarded ones. At first, we found a batch of factory leftovers—deepcarbonized bamboo in a dark charcoal gray. We imagined sheathing the whole house in it, turning Cat House into a Black Cat House. But there wasn’t enough of the dark material. We adapted, mixing in leftover tiles of different colors.
