sans-serif;\">一座城市的天际线，往往能透露很多事情：它在不同的时代重视什么，如何生长，又如何被一代代人重新想象。纽约的住宅塔楼早已成为城市轮廓中最容易被辨认的部分之一；伦敦则不断尝试让新的建筑进入层层叠加的历史之中。上海又有所不同。在不过百余年的时间里，这座城市的天际线已经被数次重新书写——从外滩到陆家嘴，再到今天仍在两者之间以及更远处不断生长的城市。对很多人来说，我们也许并不知道一栋建筑是哪一年建成、由谁设计，却会记得第一次看见一座城市时的轮廓，也会在离开很多年以后，因为远处某个熟悉的建筑重新意识到：自己回来了。但在中国，我们通常并不会用同样的方式去理解住宅。住宅更多被认为属于居住其中的人，它承载的是回家、吃饭、休息，是阳台上的植物，也是窗户背后那些并不属于公共生活的日常。可当一栋住宅以如此巨大的体量进入城市，并在那里存在三十年、五十年甚至更久，它真的还只是属于少数人的私人建筑吗？绝大多数人也许永远不会真正走进它，却会无数次从它旁边经过，会从另一条街看见它，会在照片、电影和人们记录城市的影像中遇见它，也可能在某一天凭借它的轮廓判断自己身处城市的哪里。随着时间过去，这些短暂而普通的相遇不断累积，一栋私人住宅也会慢慢进入市民、游客，甚至几代人关于一座城市的共同记忆。\u003C/span>\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp 'PingFang SC', sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">A city’s skyline often tells us a great deal: what it valued at different moments in time, how it grew, and how successive generations reimagined it. New York’s residential towers have long been among the most recognizable elements of its silhouette; London continues to explore how new buildings can enter its layered history. Shanghai is different again. In little more than a century, its skyline has been rewritten several times—from the Bund to Lujiazui, and to the city that continues to grow between and beyond them today. Many of us may not know when a building was completed or who designed it, yet we remember the silhouette of a city when we first encountered it. Even after years away, a familiar building in the distance can suddenly make us realize: we are home. In China, however, we do not usually think about housing in the same way. A residential building is more often understood as belonging to the people who live in it. It accommodates coming home, eating and resting; plants on a balcony; and the everyday lives behind windows that are not part of public life. Yet when a residential building enters the city at such an immense scale and remains there for thirty, fifty or more years, can it really still be considered a private building belonging only to a few? Most people may never enter it, but they will pass it countless times, see it from another street, encounter it in photographs, films and images documenting the city, or one day use its silhouette to work out where they are. Housing has long constituted the largest building category in Chinese cities, yet it has rarely been expected to help shape their identity. Offices, cultural buildings, commercial complexes and infrastructure tend to have more distinct public identities, while conversations about housing revolve around layouts, floor areas, specifications, views and prices—as though its value concerned mainly those who eventually move in. We imagined someone returning home after a day’s work, changing clothes, opening a door and stepping onto a terrace. The sun is setting, light brushes across the terracotta, the streets below remain busy, and farther away Shanghai begins to light up. You are home, in a profoundly private space, yet still directly connected to the entire city. Their first purpose was to respond to residents’ everyday lives, but they also continually reshaped the building’s proportions, silhouette and the way it was perceived. The tower became more slender and more vertical, presenting different expressions from different points in the city. An idea that began with daily life—something deeply private—gradually entered the urban scale. One person’s terrace ultimately became part of the skyline. This matters greatly to us. In architecture, the macro and the micro are not separate things. An architect may be working on a tower 150 metres high, yet what truly makes the building work can be the few minutes someone spends on a terrace at dusk. These lived urban experiences matter more to us than finding an instantly recognizable ‘Shanghai element’. They led us to think about proportion, material, depth and restraint. How can a building have strength without being loud? How can it be thoroughly contemporary without losing contact with the city already around it? Perhaps a true sense of place does not mean that a building ‘looks like here’, but that, many years later, it still feels as though it belongs exactly where it stands. That is why we have not understood Shanghai’s identity as a form to be copied. This matters to us because a building is ultimately not a finished rendering. It will stand through sunshine, rain and the seasons, and through repeated encounters with people. What matters about the crown is therefore not whether it can produce a sufficiently dramatic image, but whether it completes the building. A tower should not suddenly switch languages at its summit. Its crown is more like the final punctuation of a sentence. The relationships between mass, setbacks, terraces, vertical order, material, light and shadow come together here, forming a silhouette recognizable from far across the city. China Resources Land has been involved in building Chinese cities for more than thirty years; in 2026, SHoP also reached its thirtieth year. Our work on 111 West 57th Street and The Brooklyn Tower gave us very direct experience of this. The real challenge is never simply proposing a concept. This is also what we value about the collaboration: the different teams’ experience has not been used to prove that ‘we already know how to do this’. Yet in a location such as Huaihai Road, the life of a residential building will not stop at its doors and windows. It will stand for decades, sharing time with generation after generation of the city’s people. This is why we increasingly feel that the responsibilities of residential architecture extend beyond its residents. A building’s lifespan often exceeds a person’s childhood. A child may pass the same building every day, taking it as an unremarkable backdrop on the way to school. Many years later, having left the city, they may encounter it again on a return visit. They may not know who designed it, nor remember how often they once passed it, yet its silhouette may still tell them: they are home. A city’s influence on people is never confined to schools, galleries or museums.
