This is a rebuilding project for a certified kindergarten and nursery that has grown alongside its community since opening in 1976, nestled within a residential neighborhood in Kaizuka City, Osaka Prefecture. Over its long history, the school has established deep roots in the area, - so deep that children who once attended the kindergarten are now bringing their own children, creating bonds that span two generations. Woven naturally into the fabric of everyday neighborhood life, the school has quietly supported the growth of children across the years. The new building is designed to carry these cherished community ties forward into the next era.

Inspired by the Kogiki River flowing through the city and the creatures that inhabit it, we designed a space for 135 children under the concept of “A Home for Children” (Kodomo no Sumika). We designed a space for 135 children under the concept of Kodomo no Sumika — “A Home for Children.” The site is embraced by a calm streetscape of apartment blocks and detached houses, so the building’s volume was broken into segments and stepped back gradually from the road, ensuring the new structure sits lightly within its surroundings. The exterior palette was carefully tuned to harmonize with the local scenery, and brick tiles — a material with deep ties to the area — were woven into the facade to create a new presence on the street that feels, at the same time, quietly familiar.

The interiors draw on the nature and wildlife of the Kogiki River as their theme. Each playroom is distinguished by its own shade and tone of timber, allowing children to intuitively recognize their own space and develop a genuine sense of belonging. The stepped, segmented design that shapes the exterior also proved to be the key to unlocking a rich environment for early childhood within the constraints of a narrow site. By arranging the building in terraced tiers, the roof of each lower floor becomes the terrace of the floor above — securing generous outdoor play yards at every level, despite the limited footprint.

The distinctive arched facade gently moderates views and strong sunlight from the neighborhood, preserving a sense of privacy within the school, while open glass fencing along the street allows the lively energy of the children to spill naturally outward into the community. The project sets out to beautifully reinterpret, through contemporary design, the warmth that once defined how children grew up under the caring presence of their neighbors.

This new building will serve as a cherished place — one that fosters rich human connections and continues to grow into the future, together with the city of Kaizuka.
